Why Feeling Stuck Sucks And How To Move Past It.

Why Feeling Stuck Sucks And How To Move Past It.

I think that as artists we are in this perpetual state of feast or famine. At least for me, I never truly know what is around the corner. Dolls that I thought would be adopted quickly sat for weeks, while others that I was not as proud of went very quickly. It is not knowing that can force a wall into my path leaving me feeling stuck and stagnant and unmotivated to make art.

I wanted to share some of the things I do to get me out of a rut, I hope it helps!

So being stuck, I think it happens to everyone. The first step to moving beyond it is to simply accept it. You are stuck and unmotivated and think everything you do is a piece of dog crap that belongs in the trash.

You have to accept where you are first if you want to get beyond it to a happy place.

So here is what I do when I feel stuck. Not in any particular order.

  1. Get the heck off of social media. I mean it. This is the only thing that always helps. It is ok to find other artists motivating and inspiring, but when you start to feel a certain way about your own work in comparison, then it is time to shut down your phone.
  2. Remember that you can't pour from an empty cup. When I create a doll I put so much energy into it. If I don't take the time to recharge after a project I often start a new doll from a place of emptiness and that is when mistakes happen. Take a day or three off after you complete a project. I also like to sage my work area, but that is just me.
  3. Look at real babies. When I am really feeling low and uninspired I google different newborn photography studios around the world. I am always drawn back to why I love painting reborns.
  4. On that subject...why do you love painting reborns? If we can't go back to the why of it all, it will be hard to move past the barriers and the days that suck. I personally love making people feel something when they look at my dolls. I love handing my doll to someone whose instincts immediately take over and they find themselves rocking or bouncing.
  5. Just keep going. Sometimes you just need to shake off the mean voices in your head and keep working. You don't have to see the whole finished project when you begin, just simply start.

I really hope that something in this blog post helped!
